Walpole Public Library (VPL) is hosting Mad Science of Southern MA & RI during the month of March. Every Thursday, Mad Scientist Solar Shelly presents a variety of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) topics such as dinosaurs, worms, toys and film effects.
Children from kindergarten to third grade participate in these scientific activities in the library. Solar Shelly starts each session with a mini-lesson, showing different toys, old and new, and explaining how they work.
Before the activities begin, Solar Shelly goes over the three rules of mad science with the kids, emphasizing the importance of listening, following directions, and having fun. The workshop allows children to explore and understand how toys use gravity, fiction and energy.
During the session, children engage in hands-on play at five different stations set up by Solar Shelli. Each station has different toys such as gear toys, balance blocks, spinning tops and racing cars. Solar Shelly guides children through the activities, explaining the science behind each toy.
Overall, the session is a fun and educational experience for young scientists. They enjoy testing each toy and learning about its STEAM components. Children look forward to the final lesson and are eager to continue scientific research.
