Marco Goecke, the Former ballet director of the Hanover State Opera, who became known outside the dance scene for a dog feces attack on a journalist, returns to his old place of work. In February 2023, Goecke smeared dog feces on an author from the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (“FAZ”) in the foyer of the opera. He had previously accused her of always writing “bad, personal” reviews. Goecke will be one of the choreographers of a three-part ballet evening as the State Opera announced on Friday.
In the piece “The Big Crying” he will be responsible for the choreography as well as the costumes and stage design. The choreographers Hofesh Shechter and Alexander Ekman are responsible for the other two parts of the production, “Uprising” and “Cacti”. The premiere will take place on June 6, 2025 at the Opera House in Hanover. A few days after Goecke’s dog feces attack last year, his contract as ballet director in Hanover was terminated by mutual agreement.
A case against him was dropped against a monetary condition. He himself regretted the incident; according to him, it was an emotional act. In the new season, the focus will be on topics such as community and peaceful interaction with one another.
