The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors has recently approved the dates for the first boys volleyball season. As recommended by the Boys Volleyball Advisory Board, the official season will begin on March 17, 2025, and the state tournament will be held June 9-13. For its first season, boys volleyball will be a one-class activity, with 85 teams already registered to compete when the season begins next spring.

Boys volleyball was granted official sport status by the MSHSL Representative Assembly in May 2023 and operates as an “Emerging Sport” under the guidelines of the Minnesota Boys High School Volleyball Association. In 2023, the sport had 72 teams representing 78 schools. The board also finalized a draft Sunset Policy, outlining a process that offers various options for maintaining or discontinuing sports and activities that have fewer than 32 participating teams.

The MSHL Board of Directors also discussed proposed changes to the boys and girls basketball schedule, as well as the boys and girls state hockey tournaments. If these proposals are approved, all teams in each class would be seeds 1 through 8 for the quarterfinals in all four tournaments. Currently, the teams in the quarterfinals are seeded 1 through 5, while the rest are seeded in a random draw.
