Our region is fortunate to have a large number of scientific organizations that conduct research both locally and internationally. These organizations play a key role in advancing scientific knowledge and finding practical applications for their research findings. From consulting with local organizations to translating research into best practices for residents, these science organizations are deeply engaged in our communities.

At The Point, we discuss the benefits of having these world-class research organizations in our backyard. We also explore how individual scientists give back to their communities by volunteering their time and expertise on local city boards. Before diving into these topics, we examine the ways in which these organizations engage with our communities.

We are joined by Dr. Heather Goldston, Chief Communications Officer at the Woodwell Climate Research Center and former science journalist at VCAI, Dr. Laura Brothers, Marine Geologist at the US Geological Survey’s Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center, Dr. Matthew Charrett, Senior Scientist in marine chemistry and geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and director of WHOI’s Sea Grant. Joining us are Casey Chatelian, Horsley Whitten Group Environmental Scientist, Kalliope Chute, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension’s Water Quality and Hazardous Materials Program Environmental Specialist, and Abigail Archer, WHOI Sea Grant Program Fisheries and Aquaculture Specialist . Each of these individuals brings a unique perspective to the intersection of science and community engagement.
