If you’re catching up with the latest viral documentary and want to know more about the Carter family, you might wonder how Bobbie Jean Carter died. The second eldest Carter died a year after the youngest.

The Carter family had an explosive claim to fame in the early 2000s when Nick and Aaron Carter were one of the most popular music stars at the time. The brothers have three sisters, Bobbie Jean (1982-2023), Leslie (1986-2012), and Angel (born 1987).

Aaron Carter was found unresponsive in his bathroom tub on November 5, 2022. According to Variety, Aaron Carter’s autopsy report stated his death was caused by drowning and the effects of alprazolam, a generic form of Xanax and inhaling difluoroethane—an ingredient used in cans of compressed air.

A year after Aaron Carter’s death, his sister Bobbi Jean Carter was found unresponsive in her bathroom on Dec. 23, 2023. She was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.

How did Bobbi Jean Carter die?

Bobbi Jean Carter died by “intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine,” according to an initial case summary report released by the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Department obtained by People. She was 41. She is survived by her eight-year-old daughter Bella.

Bobbi Jean Carter starred in the early 2000s reality show House of Carter with her family and she also worked as a makeup artist for her brother Aaron in the early 2000s, according to TMZ. She later lived a pretty private life. According to People, she was arrested in 2023 after she allegedly stole stickers and markers from a Hobby Lobby, and was allegedly found to have drugs on her person.

In response to her death, Nick Carter made a tribute post to his sister on Instagram. “It may take a lifetime to fully process the loss my family has endured over the years – most recently, with the sudden passing of our sister Bobbie Jean,” he wrote. “I am completely heartbroken. Thank you for all your love and kind words. We are reminded again that life is precious, fleeting and to cherish the time we have with the ones we love. I know she is finally at peace with God. I love you BJ.”

Jane Carter, the mother of Bobbi Jean, Aaron, and Nick, made a statement to TMZ at the time. “I am in shock from learning of the sudden death of my daughter, Bobbie Jean, and I will need time to process the terrible reality of this happening for the third time,” Jane told the outlet. “[H]owever deeply a parent feels the loss of a child, the suffering of a young child at the loss of a parent must be much greater. So, I would ask the sympathetic to say a prayer for my precious eight year old granddaughter Bella, who previously lost her father and is now also left without her mother.”

Aaron’s twin sister Angel Carter Conrad posted a photo collage of her older sister. “You had a great sense of humor, and a lively spirit,” she captioned. “Growing up, I was your baby, and you were my best friend. Life wasn’t fair to you, that I know. Sometimes, it feels like you didn’t have a shot, no matter what.”

She continued, “Experiencing innocence instead of being burdened by trauma, pain, and suffering is incredibly important for children, particularly at such a young age. I know why Leslie, Aaron, and now you ended up in the circumstances that you did. I share that pain we experienced during our childhood and I’m sorry you didn’t have an opportunity for a better life.”
