In response to Ecuador’s violation of international law, Mexico has taken the country to the International Court of Justice. This action follows a police attack on the Mexican embassy in Quito due to the arrest of former Vice President of Ecuador, Jorge Glas. Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs Alicia Barsena announced at a press conference that Mexico will also go to multilateral organizations to condemn Ecuador’s actions that led to the severance of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The Mexican government has received solidarity from at least 18 Latin American countries, 10 European countries, the United States, Canada and various international organizations and parliamentarians. Barcena expressed outrage at the violation of diplomatic protocol and Mexico immediately cut diplomatic relations with Ecuador and closed its embassy in the country.

Mexican diplomats in Ecuador returned home with support from other embassies and the Mexican Air Force. They did so with their heads held high, proud to represent Mexico abroad. The Mexican government has also provided assistance to its citizens in Ecuador through its registration system for Mexicans abroad and embassies in nearby countries.

In this diplomatic crisis, Mexico is taking firm action to condemn Ecuador’s violation of international law and protect its diplomatic staff and citizens abroad. The support and solidarity of the international community were crucial in resolving this unfortunate event.
