Authorities are searching for missing hiker Alex Stecher and his dog Apollo, who went missing during a hike in an East Bay Regional Park.

The hiker, identified by authorities as Alex Stecher was reported missing in Alameda County’s Ohlone Wilderness Regional Preserve about 8:25 p.m. on Sunday, according to a statement from East Bay Regional Park police.

Stecher started the hike on Friday morning with his dog Apollo from the Sunol Regional Preserve trails in Sunol, police said. He never arrived for his designated pickup time Saturday afternoon at the Del Valle Regional Park in Livermore.

Personnel from the Alameda County Fire Department and Alameda County Sheriff’s Office assisted East Bay Regional Park police, fire crews and search-and-rescue teams with the search on Sunday night. Cal Fire and the California Highway Patrol also sent members to assist.

Stecher was wearing dark pants and a green long-sleeve shirt with a khaki-colored bucket hat. Police said Stecher was wearing the same outfit but for the hat as he was in a picture they released to the public in their quest to find him.

Police asked anyone who may see Stecher to contact Lt. Patrick Brookens immediately at 510-517-9447 or dispatch at 510-881-1833.
