The Van Hool bus manufacturer in Koningshooikt is on the brink of bankruptcy, but a buyer is expected to be announced early next week. Sources report that consortium VDL Groep and German trailer manufacturer Schmitz Cargobull are the leading candidates for the acquisition, with Dumarei Group and small third candidate Vlastuin also in the running.
However, it seems that Dumarei Group’s chances of acquiring the company are dwindling due to obstacles related to asset valuations and disputes over remediation costs at their site. There are also concerns about soil contamination at part of the site, which could lead to additional remediation costs that may challenge their financial position.
The union advocates for an acquirer who will keep as many jobs as possible and ensure the continuity of industrial jobs in the region. The fate of Van Hool and its employees depends on the decision of the acquirer, Flemish government, and banks involved in the process. It remains to be seen what will happen next week when a buyer is announced for Van Hool.
