Neon has revealed the first trailer for Tilman Singer’s horror feature, “Cuckoo,” revealing that not all European getaways are as relaxing as they seem.

Set for release in theaters on August 9, “Cuckoo” stars Hunter Schafer as Gretchen, a teenager who finds herself entangled in a nightmarish scenario after accepting a job offer from Herr König (played by Dan Stevens) at a resort nestled in the serene landscapes of the German Alps.

Alongside Schafer and Stevens, the film boasts a talented ensemble cast including Jessica Henwick, Jan Bluthardt, Marton Csokas, Greta Fernández, and Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey.

“How would you like to come work for me at the resort?” Stevens asks in the trailer. Later, Schafer wants to know, “Why did you bring us here?”

Singer, known for “Luz,” helms both the writing and directing of the film, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and subsequently screened at SXSW.

Producing the project are Thor Bradwell, Markus Halberschmidt, Ken Kao, Ben Rimmer, Josh Rosenbaum, and Maria Tsigka.

In his review, chief film critic David Rooney wrote,

“In Schafer and Stevens, it has two fiercely compelling adversaries. It’s ultimately too silly to be truly chilling, but with Neon behind it, Cuckoo might just be cuckoo enough to draw some cult attention.”

Schafer gained recognition for her portrayal of Jules Vaughn in HBO’s critically acclaimed drama series “Euphoria.”

She recently appeared in Lionsgate’s 2023 action film, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.”

Additionally, audiences can anticipate her role in “Kinds of Kindness,” an upcoming anthology feature from director Yorgos Lanthimos (known for “Poor Things”), alongside stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Willem Dafoe.

Stevens takes on roles in two highly anticipated films: Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” currently thrilling audiences in theaters, and Universal’s “Abigail,” set to debut later this month.
