The Bulgarian succeeded Christine Lagarde as head of the United Nations institution in the autumn of 2019. She is now the only candidate for her successor. The IMF will continue the selection procedure, including a meeting between the members of the board of directors and Georgieva, it said. “The intention is to complete the procedure as quickly as possible, at the latest by the end of April.” This is a five-year mandate. Georgieva’s current mandate expires at the end of September.
Well-informed sources report that the renewal of Georgieva’s mandate could be decided in the coming days. The decision could come before the traditional spring meeting of the IMF and sister institution World Bank from April 15 to 19.
Traditionally, a European leads the IMF and an American the World Bank, although the largest ’emerging countries’ such as China and India are increasingly questioning this tradition.
