The head of the Sunni session in the Kuwaiti National Assembly, Representative Saleh Ashour, said yesterday, Tuesday, that next Sunday has been set as the date for holding the opening session of the Council, despite the issuance of a decree to postpone the opening session of the elected parliament until next May 14. Ashour said, in a statement at the media center. The National Assembly said yesterday, Tuesday: “Out of concern for the constitutional dates related to the opening session of the eighteenth legislative term, and in accordance with Article (87) of the Constitution, the National Assembly is called to meet on Sunday, April 21.”

About 37 representatives announced that they would attend the opening session, “according to the constitutional dates.”

Ashour explained the procedures for assuming the position of President of the Senate until the completion of the procedures for electing the President of the Council in accordance with Article 92 of the Constitution.

Ashour added: “The General Secretariat of the National Assembly informed me of its communication with the oldest member, Ahmed Abdel Aziz Al-Saadoun, and he informed her of his apology for not presiding over the oldest member due to his announcement of his candidacy for the position of Speaker of the Council, and accordingly the duties of this matter were officially transferred to us.”

He stated: “As for the session on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, with the issuance of Decree No. 67 of 2024 postponing the Council meeting until Tuesday, May 14, 2024, therefore, there is no place for this session to be held.”

He said: “With regard to sending an invitation to the session next Sunday, which is the morning of the first day following the holiday after the two weeks following the elections, in accordance with Article (87) of the Constitution, and based on our concern for the constitutional dates related to the opening session and to avoid any constitutional suspicions; The Council is called, by virtue of the Constitution, in accordance with Article (87), to a session next Sunday at nine in the morning.” Representatives welcomed the appointment of Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah Al-Sabah as Prime Minister, and called on him to pay more attention to the living concerns of citizens.
