The road is covered in snow, masses of snow are bending trees and their branches – without winter equipment it is no longer possible to get through the Regen district in the Bavarian Forest. April does what he wants!

Around 30 to 40 centimeters of fresh snow fell at an altitude of 900 to 1000 meters. Due to the bad weather conditions also prevails on the Ski slopes around the Großer Arber in Bayern State of emergency.

The gondola lift and inn remain closed

The mountain railway reports sobering prospects for ski guests: “The main gondola lift will remain closed on April 20th and 21st”. And the “Eisensteiner Hütte” inn has also closed its doors for the next two days.

Even though the winter services are in constant use, the roads are covered in snow and cars and trucks can sometimes only move at walking pace.

The Regen district office is informing its residents that snow loads on their roofs are increasing in some cases. Measurements have shown that the critical area is getting closer. The Fire department District press spokesman Heiko Langer said that he could not inspect every house and certainly not remove snow from private roofs.

But for the residents of the regions around the Großer Arber, the sudden snowfall in April is not that unusual.

“In fact, snowfall has been recorded repeatedly into April in recent years. Nature in the Bavarian Forest always surprises us with its diversity,” it says on the mountain railway’s homepage.

More snow expected on Sunday night

According to the German Weather Service, a low called “Annina” is responsible for the winter weather. This is currently over Poland and is bringing cold air to Germany.

On Sunday night, meteorologists expect some heavy snowfall, especially from the Sauerland via northern Hesse to the Thuringian Forest. It could also be loud in low registers DWD form a thin blanket of snow. Above 400 to 600 meters there is more than 15 centimeters of fresh snow.
